The
second week in Greece consisted of visiting Delphi, Mykonos, Ephesus, Patmos,
Rhodes, Heraklion, and Santorini. We finished up the land tour and the majority
of the week was spent on the cruise. So many things we saw contributed to what
I have taken away from this trip, but one specifically was the site of Marathon
because even though there was not a whole lot to physically see, it was so cool
to be at the actual spot where something so big took place in history. The
other site that really stood out was the Palace of Knossos in Heraklion because
of its historical significance, having the oldest throne room and being one of
the oldest sites in Europe with its physical and mythological history.
The
monastery of Ossios Loukas and St. John’s Monastery, with the museum also, were
two of my favorite sites on this trip because of the preservation of such
beautiful architecture both on the inside and the outside. I think these stuck
out because the stories and significance were different from what we had seen
thus far on the trip.
The
cruise was an amazing experience and being able to immerse myself into the
culture by having time to walk around and explore the islands really
contributed to my experience on this May Term. The architecture, both new and
old, was something I was not aware of before this trip and probably the biggest
takeaway I have. The gorgeous white architecture on the islands and the
preservation of the buildings that were built such a long time ago with the
technology that they never could have imagined that now exists. Both types of
Greek architecture, new and old, contribute to the Greek culture and I’m so appreciative
that I had the opportunity to see them.
