As our May Term in Greece wraps up, I reflected on all the amazing sites and interesting museums we saw while on the mainland and the islands of Greece. During our second wee,k we traveled to Delphi, Mykonos, Ephesus, Patmos, Knossos, Rhodes, and Santorini. One of my favorite sites, as we finished up on the mainland, was Ossios Loukas in Delphi. It was different than the sites we had seen over the past week due to the detail that still stands today. The preservation of the church was remarkable and it was also interesting to learn the history of each detail of the church, specifically the importance of the placement of figures like the Virgin Mary and angels. Similarly, the Cave of Apocalypse and St. John’s Monastery was full of information about each detail. Being in the same places as Saint John of Patmos and seeing where he wrote the book of Revelations was one of my favorite part of the islands. The rich detail in both churches was a change of scenery from the archeological sites we had been at the previous week. As we finished up the excursions through the cruise, the Palace of Knossos will be a site I will always remember because of the impressive conservation of the palace. The palace still contains the first throne room with the original throne and the beautiful dolphin mosaics. It was truly incredible to see the impressive works of the ancient Greeks through both archeological sites as well as the little creative details at each site.
