Graham Jaeger: First Reflection
It’s absolutely insane coming into a different country for the first time and seeing life from a whole new perspective. If it wasn’t for DePauw and this opportunity, I don’t know if I would’ve ever been able to experience the world outside the United States. With that said, each one of these sites and museums that we’ve been to has largely contributed to my learning on Ancient Greece in multiple ways. Being able to physically see each one of these ancient sculptures has really expanded my mind and allowed me to visually capture the intricate details in each one. Just the pure fact that we are able to look out into these mountains and see both the Mediterranean and Aegean sea is a life altering experience because of the beautiful scenery that it holds. Despite all of what we’ve seen being amazing, I personally found Poseidon’s temple to be my favorite. This was largely because of the view that surrounded it and how well it is still put together even after thousands of years. Poseidon’s Temple is an absolutely stunning site because of all of the ocean that surrounds it specifically because he is the god of water. The view literally makes you feel like your watching a movie with a green screen because of how beautiful it is. Something I learned that I had never known before was how ancient the temple was as it was built in the middle of the 5th century BCE (between 444 and 440 BCE). It was part of the ambitious building project initiated by Perikles, which included other astounding temples such as the Parthenon and the Hephaisteion. This temple is about as ancient as a piece can get which makes it mind blowing that it is still around.
